Ghalieb Dawood has recently joined AFReC as an Economist in the Training and Consulting Division. He has a BBusSci (major in HR management), and a BCom (Hons) in Economics (including macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, and development economics) from UCT. He then completed a coursework MSc in Economics at UCT (advanced macroeconomics, advanced microeconomics, quantitative techniques, advanced labour economics, demography, and microeconometrics). His dissertation was on "Applying fuzzy-set theoretic poverty measures within a developmental local government context: the Khayalitsha-Mitchell's Plain case study". While at UCT Ghalieb was an executive member of the Mandela Economics Scholarship Association, and Vice Chair of Masizame, a SHAWCO affiliate.
Ghalieb has worked as an assistant at the Woodstock Community Office, a researcher and HR consultant for Citizen Surveys, and a researcher for SALDRU. Research projects he has worked on include a quality of life survey in the Western Cape, development of management systems to support a land claims project, research and database compilation on zoning rights and liquor licenses in Mitchell's Plain, a qualitative study of youth social networks, and evaluation of training for day-care workers in Caledon. Given this experience, it is not surprising that Ghalieb has developed a strong interest in applied public finance issues, particularly in local government.
